Appassimento - a drying art ~ April 27, 2013 VINTAGES release

 April 27, 2013 VINTAGES release

In this release, April 27, 2013, VINTAGES release features:

Recently, I have noticed that the price point of new releases is somewhat higher so I'm changing my focus for my selections.  In the past, I made a list of those most likely to make it into my bag but that leaves many intriguing choices out.  As always, my picks usually sway towards something I haven't tried before - I always like to expand my sommelier horizons.  Having said that I'm a sucker for a good wine for sipping.  Bolded text continues to indicate what caught my eye. An → signifies that it is most likely going in my shopping bag.

My picks include ...

MARC DE BOURGOGNE ÉGRAPPÉ RÉSERVE DU CARDINAL VINTAGES 321422 | 700 mL bottle Price $36.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Floral and generously aromatic. Notes of vanilla, pear, carob bean, spice and wood. Rich and delicious (if you'll pardon the obvious but it is true!). Additional notes of earth and nuts in the mouth deliver even more complexity. The perfect digestif for that special evening when making the right impression is key, or for simply treating yourself like royalty - and why not, you deserve it. (VINTAGES panel, Oct. 2012)"

MIGUEL TORRES SANTA DIGNA ESTELADO SPARKLING BRUT ROSÉ 2011 VINTAGES 317669 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "(100% pais): Light orange-pink. Redcurrant and cherry on the pungent, spice-accented nose. Lithe, precise and dry, with good lift to its spicy red berry and bitter blood orange flavors. Finishes silky and dry, with lingering floral and spice notes and very good energy. This suave bubbly rose matches up to plenty of non-vintage versions from Champagne, but a far more reasonable price Score - 89. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, May 2012)"

PREVEDELLO ASOLO SUPERIORE EXTRA DRY PROSECCO 2011 VINTAGES 262881 | 750 mL bottle Price $17.95 - LCBO Description: Produced by noted Toronto restaurateur Franco Prevedello, and from his family-owned hillside vineyard in the heart of the Prosecco region. Less dry than a brut Champagne, you will find this to possess a rounded, more mouthfilling profile. Lively bubbles and nuances of apple and pear with a crisp acidity. Excellent with grilled prawns and calamari, but will also work as a beautiful aperitif.

STONEY RIDGE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010 VINTAGES 327809 | 750 mL bottle Price $16.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "This is a well-made cabernet from an Ontario vintage that permitted cabernet to ripen fully. Look for good complexity in the fruit, which is solid and consistent right through the palate, an attractive texture, and good fruit-acid balance. The tannins are easy-going, and this is drinking well now through 2015. Score - 4 Stars (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, rodphillipsonwine.com, Feb. 15, 2013)"

MCMANIS CHARDONNAY 2011 VINTAGES 265983 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Chardonnay with a twist. This intense wine with some oak aging has a smack of alcohol -- 13.5 percent -- and wonderfully intense apple, pear and pineapple notes with an underpinning of tropical fruit and acidity. It has viscous texture in the mouth. It paints the palate. It has the body to stand up to spicy Asian dishes, bold grilled chicken dishes and roast or grilled pork. It's a great value from this multi-generational farming family in Ripon, Calif. (Sandra Silfven, The Detroit News, Aug. 1, 2012)"

DOMINUS NAPANOOK 2009 VINTAGES 212357 | 750 mL bottle Price $66.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "The 2009 Napanook is simply glorious. Sweet dark cherries, mint, tobacco, wild flowers and licorice all jump from the glass. The 2009 is a juicy, extroverted Napanook that impresses for its sheer pleasure and total harmony. Layers of fruit continue to build to the huge, creamy finish. As good as the 2009 is today, I have a hard time thinking it won't be better in another few years. If anything, this is too serious a wine for an entry-level offering. The 2009 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Score - 93. (Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2012)"

SUSANA BALBO SIGNATURE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011 VINTAGES 260919 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "[Tasted at the winery, February 2012] The signature is that of Susana Balbo, one of Argentina's foremost winemakers. Selecting grapes (there's 10% malbec here) from three sub-regions of Mendoza, she has created a red with bold and luscious flavours. The layered complexity is impressive, the acidity pitches to make a juicy tanginess, and the tannins are forward and ripe. Best drunk 2013 to 2018. Score - 4 1/2 Stars (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, rodphillipsonwine.com, Jan. 5, 2013)"

MAYCAS DEL LIMARÍ RESERVA ESPECIAL SYRAH 2009 VINTAGES 269423 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Deep inky-black colour; really intense and perfumed nose here, with a fine range of spicy, black pepper, violet, fresh cassis and blackberry as well as integrated, wood-derived spices. The palate is fullish, fleshy, structured, terrifically intense, with marked wood but so much supporting fruit as to ensure integration over the next 1-3 years on the cellar. All in all, this is an exceptional value wine with quality, complexity and class way, way above the asking price. Outstanding. Tasted January 2011. Score - 91. (John Szabo, M.S., winealign.com, Feb. 23, 2011)"

ERADUS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2011 VINTAGES 225557 | 750 mL bottle Price $17.00 - LCBO Tasting Note: "The 2011 vintage is a good buy. Vibrant and racy, with punchy melon and green-capsicum flavours, it shows excellent freshness, intensity and immediacy. Score - 4 Stars (out of 5). (Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines, 2012)"

MOUNT RILEY CHARDONNAY 2011 VINTAGES 32318 | 750 mL bottle Price $17.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Aromas of apple, pear, white peach and citrus. The palate is very fresh and nervy, with a very light mouth feel that runs wonderfully counter to expectation, but in a rewarding and satisfying way. Refreshing and crisp, it will make a very nice pairing for seafood salads or sautéed scallops. (VINTAGES panel, March 2013)"

WAIMEA SAUVIGNON BLANC 2011 VINTAGES 714295 | 750 mL bottle Price $17.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Always a good buy. The 2011 vintage, estate-grown on the Waimea Plains, is very punchy and crisp, with good acid spine and strong melon, lime and slight spice flavours, vibrantly fruity, tangy and long. Score - 4 Stars (out of 5). (Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines, 2012)"

LAMMERSHOEK ROULETTE BLANC 2010 VINTAGES 225458 | 750 mL bottle Price $21.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "The 2010 Roulette Blanc is a blend of Chenin Blanc (around 50%) plus Viognier, Chardonnay and Clairette. It has a truly wonderful bouquet that leaps out of the glass: lime cordial, honeysuckle, jasmine and broom all with stunning delineation. The palate is very well balanced with a touch of orange peel on the entry. It has brilliant balance with such clarity on the complex, waxy-textured, white Chateauneuf-inspired finish. Drink now-2020. Score - 93. (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2012)"

CAVE DE TURCKHEIM VIEILLES VIGNES RIESLING 2009 VINTAGES 315036 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Fantastic characteristic notes of wet stone minerality and lime citrus with grapefruit and orange tones too. The nose is also beginning to show a very nice petrol quality. Quite racy in the mouth, with very strong reflections of the aroma profile. This old vine Alsatian is an impressive win; try it out with friends and some deep-fried calamari. (VINTAGES panel, Aug. 2012)"

DOMAINE SAINT-RÉMY RÉSERVE GEWURZTRAMINER 2011 VINTAGES 61150 | 750 mL bottle Price $18.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Very exciting aromas of spiced apricot, lychee, honey, peach and ginger. Wonderful replays and spice, with a touch of sweetness on the palate and a gorgeous flavour intensity throughout. Enjoy it with paprika chicken or a lightly spiced curry dish. (VINTAGES panel, Aug. 2012)"

CLOS DE NOUYS DEMI-SEC VOUVRAY 2011 VINTAGES 322669 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Aromas of yellow melon, apple, and hazelnut. Citrus and pear on the palate with some mushroom notes and a flinty minerality. Enjoy this with a blue cheese, or with a seafood platter. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2012)"

DOMAINE DE LA GRENAUDIÈRE MUSCADET SÈVRE & MAINE 2011 VINTAGES 326827 | 750 mL bottle Price $14.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "A very engaging nose here, with melon, grapefruit, lemon, mineral and floral notes offering up a lovely aromatic experience. The palate is crisp and refreshing with a massive return on the investment as promised by the nose. Great depth of citrus fruit flavours, wet rock and bright apple fruit. Try this with baked oysters and wild mushrooms. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2012)"

DOMAINE DE SAINT SIFFREIN CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2010 VINTAGES 169771 | 750 mL bottle Price $41.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "A blend of two-thirds Grenache and the rest mostly Syrah and Mourvedre with a touch of Cinsault from 60-year-old vines, all aged in old wood foudres, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is deep and full-bodied. One of the great buys of the vintage, it exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color as well as abundant notes of black raspberries, incense, Asian plum sauce, garrigue and licorice. With stunning concentration and purity, a full-bodied texture and a long finish, it still has some tannins to shed, so give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15-20. Drink: 2014-2034. Score - 94. (Robert Parker Jr., erobertparker.com, Oct. 2012)"

KÖNIGSCHAFFHAUSER VULKANFELSEN PINOT NOIR ROSÉ TROCKEN 2012 VINTAGES 168237 | 750 mL bottle Price $12.95 - LCBO Description: "The vineyard name refers to the volcanic soils that are a significant element of Baden's composition. A refreshing rosé that will offer lovely aromatics including rose petals, strawberry and red apple. The palate will be dry, with tangy fruit and a considerable acidity that will make this an ideal sipper, but it will match very well with grilled white fish."

GAIA THALASSITIS ASSYRTIKO 2011 VINTAGES 315010 | 750 mL bottle Price $21.95 - LCBO Tasting Note
The 2011 Thalassitis is one of Greece's most recognizable Assyrtikos, and this vintage looks like a big winner. From very old vines (approximately 80 years old), this Assyrtiko has laser beam acidity, very fine concentration in the mid-palate, focus and intensity. The grip on the finish is notable and it lingers very nicely. It actually becomes more penetrating with aeration and warmth. It doesn't even really begin to show its stuff until Day 2, though. Of all the young whites I opened for this report, this was certainly one of the most intense and deepest. It was unevolved even when retasted on Day 2, the acidity zipping through the concentrated fruit. Yet, it was never shrill, the solid mid-palate easily holding its own. This is a stunner that should be closer to peak next summer. If you want to drink it this summer, it is not infanticide, it will still drink quite well, but it won't be at peak. Since it is also a terrific value, of course, you can probably afford to squander a bottle or two. Drink now-2019. Score - 93. (Mark Squires, erobertparker.com, April 2012)

FONTANAFREDDA SERRALUNGA D'ALBA BAROLO 2007 VINTAGES 943290 | 750 mL bottle Price $39.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Thanks to new ownership and recent dynamic changes, the historic Fontanafredda estate is poised to bring us many beautiful surprises in the future. This gorgeous Nebbiolo from the opulent 2007 vintage delivers delicate floral aromas of red rose and violet in front of espresso, chocolate, cola and black cherry. Drink after 2018. Score - 94. (Monica Larner, Wine Enthusiast, Sept. 2011)"

IL MARRONETO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2007 VINTAGES 190108 | 750 mL bottle Price $46.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Marroneto is striking. Freshly cut roses, sweet red berries, mint and licorice are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. Firm tannins provide the backbone to the fruit. The 2007 impresses for its freshness, vibrancy and fabulous overall balance. Bright, high-toned floral notes add lift on the finish. Most important of all, the wine is flat-out delicious. This is a fabulous showing from Il Marroneto. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. Score - 94. (Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com, April 2012)"

MOCALI MORELLINO DI SCANSANO 2010 VINTAGES 317115 | 750 mL bottle Price $16.95 - LCBO Description: "'What is currently the most 'wine-tastic' corner of Tuscany? ... the coastal zone of the Maremma ... [and] Morellino di Scansano, the quintessential wine of the Maremma, is now the Tuscan wine of choice in the chicest enoteche (wine bars) of Rome.' (Harry Eyres, The Telegraph, July 14, 2011); LCBO Tasting Note: "A wine with dried fruits, chocolate and light coffee character follow through to a full body, with integrated tannins and a fruity finish. Delicious all around. Excellent Morellino. Drink now. Score - 91. (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Sept. 7, 2012)"

CARPINETO DOGAJOLO ROSATO 2012 VINTAGES 699934 | 750 mL bottle Price $13.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Made with the classic Chianti grapes, Sangiovese and Canaiolo, this dry-farmed Tuscan rosé is perfect for springtime - and for the dinner table. Sports pretty notions of strawberry-rhubarb jam, watermelon, sour cherry and wildflowers. Crisp, clean and elegant with a savoury herb-kissed finish. Match it to a pasta salad with sun-dried tomatoes, or tapas featuring marinated olives and chorizo. (VINTAGES panel, March 2013)"

LANGA TRADICION CENTENARIA GARNACHA 2008 VINTAGES 194795 | 750 mL bottle Price $14.95 - LCBO Description
Jay Miller of erobertparker.com gave this wine a score of 90 in 2011. LCBO Tasting Note: "Opaque ruby. Exotic spices and potpourri accent blackberry, cherry and cassis on the heady nose. Lush and creamy, with ripe dark berry flavors and a suggestion of candied flowers. Finishes on a juicy black raspberry note, with gentle tannic grip and impressive length. Score - 91. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Sept. 2012)"

going in my shopping bag → CODORNÍU SELECCIÓN RAVENTÓS BRUT CAVA VINTAGES 521773 | 750 mL bottle Price $14.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "A lovely, balanced and very good value Cava here that might fool one into believing it is Champagne. Elegant floral notes and a touch of yeast enliven the palate. A serious effort with very good length. Tasted January 2012. Score - 88. (Sara d'Amato, winealign.com, Jan. 29, 2012)"

ROSEHALL RUN CUVÉE COUNTY CHARDONNAY 2010 VINTAGES 132928 | 750 mL bottle Price $21.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Winemaker Dan Sullivan delivered impressive ripeness with this 2010 chardonnay from Prince Edward County. And it's beautifully balanced - full-bodied and round, with a buttery quality and flavours of peach and tropical fruit lifted by mouthwatering acidity. Crowd-pleasing and complex, it would be a perfect match for creamy squash soup. Score - 90. (Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, Sept. 19, 2012)"

VIEWPOINTE ESTATE AUXERROIS 2011 VINTAGES 327239 | 750 mL bottle Price $14.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Aromas of nectarines, yellow apple and plum, with a gently floral note. Gently kissed by sweetness, this is ripe and quite attractive in the mouth. The palate is flavour-packed, far more so than the nose. A delightful wine, from a largely unknown grape. This will impress with a paprika spiced chicken, or pad Thai. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)"

NORMAN HARDIE COUNTY UNFILTERED PINOT NOIR 2011 VINTAGES 125310 | 750 mL bottle Price $35.00 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Another very fine expression of the County from Pinot maestro Norm Hardie. Opens with alluring notions of beetroot, red roses, red cherry, raspberry which echo in bright, juicy and lively fashion on the palate. Tons of attractive red fruit here. Most impressive, though, is this wine's understated elegance. Look for this wine to show well over 5+ years. A good choice tonight with herbed roast beef. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)"

CHALK HILL CHARDONNAY 2010 VINTAGES 706580 | 750 mL bottle Price $57.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "This offers an expansive mix of ripe fig, apricot, mango and tropical fruit, holding a rich posture on the long, layered finish. Constantly changing in the glass, it shows off a multi-dimensional expression of dark raspberries, crushed flowers, licorice and spices. I especially like the way this blossoms through the mid-palate and onto the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Score - 93. (Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com, Aug. 2011)"

CADE NAPA CUVÉE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009 VINTAGES 296509 | 750 mL bottle Price $79.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "So good. Chocolate and cassis aromas blend wonderfully with dark fruit, vanilla spice and coffee. Excellent structure, with artfully interwoven tannins, acidity and fruit. Very, very nice chocolate and coffee replays and a fantastic length. This one just keeps on coming. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2012)"

ESTANCIA PINOT NOIR 2011 VINTAGES 421586 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Estancia pride themselves on their handcrafted artisanal approach to winemaking, and the care they take translates wonderfully into their wines. This is quite bright on the nose with lots of red fruit and red cherry representation. Very well structured, balanced and solid. More red fruits supported by bright acidity. A lovely wine. (VINTAGES panel, July 2012)"

OPUS ONE 2009 VINTAGES 26310 | 750 mL bottle Price $385.00 - LCBO Tasting Note: "(a blend of 81% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot, 4% merlot and 1% malbec): Full medium ruby. Wild, flamboyantly expressive aromas of black raspberry, crystallized blackberry, smoke, leather, licorice, bitter chocolate and cedar, lifted by violet and spices. Smooth, mouthfilling and decidedly dry, with a lightly dusty character to its flavors of dark fruits, minerals and game. The broad, very long finish features building tannins. Quite different in style from the higher-pitched 2008, which was tighter and more floral at the same stage of its evolution. Score - 93. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, May 2012)"

STONESTREET FIFTH RIDGE CABERNET SAUVIGNON/MERLOT 2007 VINTAGES 201749 | 750 mL bottle Price $36.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Given the quality and value of this superb Stonestreet, one's mouth simply waters for a taste of their more expensive offerings. The nose is rich and full, with chocolate, plum, and dark fruits and cedar. The palate has pleasing structure, more fruit and firm ripe tannins. Lovely balance throughout. Enjoy with grilled steak, and someone you really wish to impress. (VINTAGES panel, July 2012)"

(VINTAGES panel April 2012)"

MAYCAS DEL LIMARÍ RESERVA ESPECIAL CHARDONNAY 2009 VINTAGES 162040 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "The 2009 Chardonnay Reserva Especial spent 12 months in 38% new French oak in which malolactic fermentation was blocked. It reveals a light touch of oak, spiced apple, poached pear, and stony minerals. Medium-bodied but with greater density than the Reserva cuvee, it exhibits a vibrant, Chablis-like personality, excellent balance, and a lengthy, refreshing finish. It will provide enjoyment over the next 4-5 years. Score - 90. (Jay Miller, erobertparker.com, Feb. 2012)"

MITOLO JESTER SHIRAZ 2009 VINTAGES 180430 | 375 mL bottle Price $11.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Bright purple. Lively aromas of blackberry, cassis and spices. Spicy, bright and very fruity, with good energy to its dark berry flavors. This is far from a stereotypical Aussie shiraz. Finishes with smooth, gentle tannins and lingering spiciness. Offers considerable upfront appeal. Score - 90. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2011)"

PIRATHON SHIRAZ 2010 VINTAGES 130278 | 750 mL bottle Price $29.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Matured in a mix of American, French, Russian and Hungarian oak. Bottled without fining or filtration. Has quickly developed a reputation as one of the best value Barossan reds on the market. This is a tip top release. Easy-going ripeness with seamless, integrated tannin and juicy, fruity length. Style and substance in an easy-to-like package. Flavours of blackberries and raspberry jubes, streaky dried herbs and kirsch. It's a sweet style of shiraz but it's an excellent example of what the Barossa does so well. Drink : 2012-2017. Score - 92. (Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au, Sept. 4, 2011)"

PYRENEES RIDGE RIDGE RED SHIRAZ 2010 VINTAGES 311381 | 750 mL bottle Price $17.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "I know this is a second label, but if I were winemaker/owner Graeme Jukes I wouldn't hide the (shiraz) light under the (Ridge Red) bushel - this is a thoroughly nice shiraz. Bright crimson, it has a vibrant and spicy palate built around medium-bodied blackberry and plum fruit, with nice touches of American oak and dark savoury/spicy notes to the tannins on the finish. Drink it or keep for 5+ years. Drink [until] 2019. Score - 90. (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, July 17, 2012)

RUSTENBERG CHARDONNAY 2011 VINTAGES 598631 | 750 mL bottle Price $22.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Matured in 40% new and 60% second-fill 300-liter Burgundian oak barrels for 12 months, the 2011 Chardonnay has a competent bouquet of citrus lemon and a touch of tangerine, although it is laconic and conservative, refusing to put its head above the parapet. The palate is crisp on the entry with subtle orange peel and passion fruit notes that build nicely in the mouth, leading to a poised, vivacious finish. This is a delicious Chardonnay - but I sense it could give more with bottle age. Drink now-2017. Score - 90. (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2012)"

HUGEL GENTIL 2011 VINTAGES 367284 | 750 mL bottle Price $14.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "This Gentil feels appropriately delicate, lemon-pithy in its fruit character and scented with a floral musk that brings witch hazel to mind. The vintage pulls predominantly from pinot blanc and sylvaner (24 percent of each), with gewurztraminer contributing its mild, savory spice - fennel seed and caraway - and riesling its fine, mineral-tinged line of acidity. Score - 89. (Peter Liem, wineandspiritsmagazine.com, Dec. 2012)"

BACHELDER BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY 2010 VINTAGES 272005 | 750 mL bottle Price $29.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Lovely subtleties in this Bourgogne Blanc with cream, mineral, beeswax, citrus and apple fruit aromas. It is nicely integrated already with classic mineral, smoke, flint and fine fruit on the palate that presents itself in a clean, textured style. Score - 90. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, Aug, 6, 2012)"

CHÂTEAU FAVRAY POUILLY-FUMÉ 2011 VINTAGES 323642 | 750 mL bottle Price $21.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Herbaceous, flinty and floral ... lemon-lime, ripe pineapple and orchard fruit riding a racy river over the palate. It's mid weight and nicely textured with a crisp, mouth-watering aftertaste. Well balanced and brimming with fruit flavour and good moderating acidity, it delivers on all counts. Pair with dressed arugula under crumbled chèvre. Score - 4 Stars (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Aug. 1, 2012)

CHÉREAU-CARRÉ LA GRIFFE BERNARD CHÉREAU MUSCADET SÈVRE & MAINE 2011 VINTAGES 948182 | 750 mL bottle Price $14.95 - LCBO Description: "Producers in this region began experimenting with lees contact for their Muscadet wines in the mid 1980s. Vintage after vintage, this charming wine bears witness to the worth of that effort. Tart-and-tangy, floral, and citrus flavoured, it sparkles with pan-seared scallops, mussels, or simple seafood dishes, particularly when a splash of the wine is included in the cooking process."

going in my shopping bag → CHÂTEAU DE CLOTTE 2010 VINTAGES 307215 | 750 mL bottle Price $16.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Côtes de Castillon was established in 1989, and these wines represent an exciting new voice in an historic region. Aromas of plum, black fruits and cassis dominate. Quite fruit forward in style, with a sweet fruit core, some spice and tar notes in the mouth. Typical of 2010 this offers great fruit and aging potential at a tremendous value. (VINTAGES panel, June 2012)"

CHÂTEAU LA CROIX DE QUEYNAC 2009 VINTAGES 138636 | 750 mL bottle Price $15.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "An exceptionally fine Bordeaux and an excellent value. Blackberry, licorice and sage aromas lead into intense blackberry, black plum and cedar flavours. A very dense, intense red for the money. Food suggestion: spicy sausage penne. Score - 90. (Gordon Stimmell, The Toronto Star, Jan. 7, 2012)"

Petit Bill's & all things Macallan

So far I've thoroughly enjoyed bourbon-matching dinners at Petit Bill's so I was not going to miss out on the Scotch-matching dinner featuring the Macallan Highland single malt Scotch whiskies.  We were not disappointed.  Everything was paired beautifully.  In fact, I can hardly wait until the rabbit is featured again ... I never thought I would say that!  I must admit that I didn't take any tasting notes nor many photos of the range of expressions of Macallan since I was too busy enjoying myself.  I promise to be more diligent next time!

the menu was as follows:

→ Fine Oak 10 year old paired with celeriac purée - clove scented caramel dust, toasted walnuts & celery leaf
  • Macallan tasting notes: the fine oak range is Triple Cask Matured in a unique, complex combination of exceptional oak casks; Spanish oak seasoned with Sherry, American oak seasoned with Sherry & American oak seasoned with Bourbon.  At 10 years old, it's incredibly fresh & vibrant.  40% ABV

→ Sherry Oak 12 year old paired with crispy fried rabbit, caramelized onion & carrot with grapefruit butter sauce
  • Macallan tasting notes: the Macallan Sherry Oak is exclusively matured for a minimum of 12 years in Spanish oak casks that are handcrafted and Sherry Seasoned in Jerez, Spain.  Our most popular expression. 40% ABV

→ Fine Oak 15 year old paired with French Canadian pork creton with parmesan crostinis
  • Macallan tasting notes: this legendary Single Malt is Triple Cask Matured for a minimum of 15 years delivering an extraordinarily smooth, delicate, yet complex Single Malt.  The ultimate expression of American oak character in a Single malt.  43% ABV

→ Sherry Oak 18 year old paired with rich lamb stew with gorgonzola cheese crumble
  • Macallan tasting notes: the Single Malt against which all others are measured.  This legendary Macallan expression is matured in Spanish Sherry casks for a minimum of 18 years.  Creating a wonderfully rich, natural colour and silky mouth feel that lingers for minutes on end.  43% ABV

→ Cask strength paired with oven-roasted quail - dried fruit & baking spice croissant stuffing, cauliflower purée, roasted mirepoix & pan jus
  • Macallan tasting notes: this expression, aged exclusively in Spanish oak casks seasoned with Sherry, is bottled at full cask strength without chill filtration or the addition of water.  Resulting in a particularly rich Macallan, best enjoyed with a splash of water to release the complex aromas and sumptuous flavours.  60.3% ABV

→ the dessert was Laphroaig-induced campfire s'mores

I spoke with Randy Fitzpatrick (owner of Petit Bill's) afterwards about upcoming matching events such as vodka, cocktails and (I'm hoping) tequila.  Sign me up!!!

Next is a bourbon-matching dinner on April 9th @6pm: Sazarac Family of Bourbon Tutored Tasting & Food Pairing. Randy writes: "Join us on Tuesday, April 9; for a very special & informative evening of whiskey tasting & food matching with Liam Doody, Ambassador for the Sazarac Family of Kentucky Bourbons, as he guides you through an evening of all things bourbon. Each whisky will be paired with it's own unique dish prepared by our Chef Glen Sansome & his team. Limited seating is $75 each (including tax & grat)."

See you there!!!

a warm welcome - March 30, 2013 VINTAGES release

March 30, 2013 VINTAGES release

In this release, March 30, 2013, VINTAGES features:
  • the wines of Southern France:
    • winning teams: Picpoul de Pinet, Viognier, Syrah, Grenache & Carignan
    • appellation foundation: Blanquette de Limoux, Faugères, Corbières, Saint-Chinian & Minervois
  • Ontario wines for Easter feasts: 13th Street, Le Clos Jordanne, Bachelder, Peninsula Ridge, Fielding & Featherstone
  • local talent - Ontario Rieslings: The Good Earth, Château des Charmes, Rosewood & Foreign Affair

I will provide a list of those most likely to make it into my bag ... the visual of my red sharpie & yellow highlighter has been replaced by bolded text (as to what caught my eye). I must add that price plays a factor - I don't usually buy wine over $30 unless it is something spectacular. çAlso, I need to make mention that my choices usually sway towards something I haven't tried before. I like to challenge my nose & palate.

My picks include ...

* note:  Unfortunately for me, many of the intriguing picks are way out of my budget.

MASSANDRA WHITE MUSCAT 2009 VINTAGES 259697 | 750 mL bottle Price $15.95
- LCBO Tasting Note: "Massandra was constructed in the 1890s to supply the summer palace of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II. The Tsar's were known for many things, but not for skimping on quality. Floral with suitably rich aromas of caramel, apricot, and honey. Lovely flavour replays, excellent acidity, and a lengthy finish. It will reign supreme when served with poached pears, or salty blue cheeses and walnut bread. (VINTAGES panel, Aug. 2012)"

ROSEWOOD NATALIE'S SÜSSRESERVE RIESLING 2010 VINTAGES 258806 | 750 mL bottle Price $14.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "This is a signature style of Riesling for Rosewood ... Riesling juice is added back to the wine before bottling to add complexity, natural acidity and sweetness. The 2010 version shows an attractive nose of lime cordial, sweet ginger, apricots and peach. It's off-dry on the palate with lovely, honey-sweet fruits, juicy apricot and mango with a ginger accent. Delicious stuff. Score - 90. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, June 3, 2012)"

THE GOOD EARTH DRY RIESLING 2010 VINTAGES 324244 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "This is [winemaker Andrea] Glass's style of Riesling. Clean, crisp and bone dry. 'I love dry Riesling,' she says. 'It's the quintessential oyster wine or with anything else you can squeeze a lemon on.' The nose displays, not surprisingly, fresh-squeezed lemon, apples and just a hint of peach. It is quite austere on the palate with citrus-grapefruit fruit and wet-stone minerality. Score - 88. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, Oct. 25, 2011)"

LA CREMA PINOT NOIR 2011 VINTAGES 732040 | 375 mL bottle Price $16.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Gentle woodsmoke and vanilla notes with rich ripe raspberry and bright cherry aromas. Robust and full-flavoured, with fine-grained tannins streamlining the finish. This one calls for double-smoked bacon sandwiches or blackened lamb. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)"

LANDER-JENKINS SPIRIT HAWK CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010 VINTAGES 161398 | 750 mL bottle Price $18.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Loads of fruit on the nose with considerable mineral, herbal and licorice notes too. The palate is fruit-forward and balanced with more mineral and herbal notes and a lovely long finish. A great Californian Cabernet that is hitting well above its price point. A real bargain. Fire up the grill and match this sizzling Cab to a juicy grilled beef tenderloin. (VINTAGES panel, July 2012)"

ANGULO INNOCENTI MALBEC 2010 VINTAGES 305813 | 750 mL bottle Price $18.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "The two wines from Angulo Innocenti are outstanding values. The 2010 Malbec is a glass-coating opaque purple color with an enticing bouquet of spice box, lavender, cherry cola, and assorted black fruits. Savory, ripe, and succulent on the palate, this full-bodied effort has enough depth and concentration to drink well through 2018+. Score - 90. (Jay Miller, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2011)"

ERASMO 2006 VINTAGES 311837 | 750 mL bottle Price $21.95
- LCBO Tasting Note: "Francesco Marone Cinzano of Montalcino's snazzy-looking 'winery at the end of the world'. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Dry farmed and quite distinctive. Quite fragile and transparent fruit - this wine positively pulsates with life. Very natural-tasting acidity. Good stuff that is not remotely like a Brunello. Superior. Drink 2010 to 2014. Score - 17 (out of 20). (Jancis Robinson, MW, jancisrobinson.com, Sept. 30, 2010)"

JOSEPH CATTIN HATSCHBOURG PINOT GRIS 2010 VINTAGES 260240 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95
- LCBO Tasting Note: "Rich white fruit aromas erupt on the nose and continue on to the palate. Floral, mineral finish is vibrant and refreshing. Powerful wine. Score - 4 Stars (out of 5). (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2012)"

VIEIL ARMAND GRAND CRU OLLWILLER RIESLING 2009 VINTAGES 315135 | 750 mL bottle Price $20.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "[Translated from the french] This wine has a beautiful golden yellow color, bright and rich. The nose is complex and wide open; offering lovely, ripe notes of apricot, beeswax and orange zest. The aromas lead to a nice mouthfeel, slightly tannic, giving character to the wine. Score - Prix d'excellence. (Vinalies Nationales, 2012)"

CHAVET & FILS LA DAME DE JACQUES COEUR MENETOU-SALON BLANC 2011 VINTAGES 525048 | 750 mL bottle Price $19.95
- LCBO Tasting Note: "Aromas of crushed rocks, sea salt and garden herbs blend wonderfully with pear and floral notes. Medium bodied, with a bright, vibrant and etched minerality with a crisp finish. Try tonight with a mildly seasoned shrimp-stuffed sole. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)"

CHÂTEAU SÉNÉJAC 2009 VINTAGES 193037 | 750 mL bottle Price $28.85 - LCBO Tasting Note: "This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the finest Senejac I have tasted. The team from Pontet Canet, who have done such a phenomenal job at that estate, were in charge of making this Senejac, and the result, not surprisingly, is a sensational wine that consumers need to buy by the case. Dense purple, with notes of creme de cassis, incense, licorice and forest floor, this wine is delicious and full-bodied, with sweet tannins, low acidity, copious fruit and exceptional concentration. Everything is in balance, and the wine is capable of lasting 10 or more years. Score - 93. (Robert Parker Jr., erobertparker.com, Feb. 2012)"

LES GRANDES SERRES RASTEAU 2010 VINTAGES 313254 | 750 mL bottle Price $16.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Vivid ruby. Intense red berry and cherry aromas and flavors are complemented by notes of pungent herbs and flowers. Juicy and gently sweet on entry, then firmer in the mid-palate, finishing with good grip and spicy persistence. Score - 89. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, May 2012)"

LIBRANDI DUCA SANFELICE CIRÒ RISERVA ROSSO 2009 VINTAGES 695874 | 750 mL bottle Price $15.95 - LCBO Description: "The Cirò region typically bestows full-bodied, robust and flavourful wines that, modestly speaking, express little subtlety. Many producers are now experimenting with small oak barrel maturation, and producing ripe and fruity wines with an enlightening elegance and impressive balance. Our panel found this one quite elegantly styled. Enjoy it with short ribs or grilled steak."

LUIGI RIGHETTI CAMPOLIETI RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE 2010 VINTAGES 695890 | 750 mL bottle Price $16.95 - LCBO Description: "Campolieti means 'happy fields', and as the Dalai Lama has observed: 'Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.' A perfect commentary on the skill, from field to bottle, that goes into every stage of this ripe, rich and fruity wine. Expect aromas and flavours of plum, black berry, and chocolate. Will very happily pair with beef, lamb, or a spaghetti with grilled eggplant."

VARANDA DO CONDE ALVARINHO/TRAJADURA VINHO VERDE 2011 VINTAGES 966663 | 750 mL bottle Price $13.95 - LCBO Tasting Note: "Close your eyes, and let this wines sunny aromas and flavours summon a sense of summer. Fashioned in the traditional bone-dry style, this Vinho Verdo offers up ample apple and citrus aromas and flavours, a light spritz, and a flavourful finish. Delicious with crab, mussels or oysters on the half shell. (VINTAGES panel, July 2012)"

There you have it.  My choices based on price-point & intrigue.
